Dale Vander Veen

Pastor Dale W. Vander Veen, 80, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on October 25, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Edith; children, Cindy (David) Frieswyk, Tim (Marlene) Vander Veen, Jen (Gregg) Colburn; grandchildren, Kenny, and Nate (Karen) Frieswyk, Regan and Jarod Vander Veen, Grace and Grant Colburn; brother, Art (Jan) Vander Veen; brother-in-law, Dave (Barb) Swierenga, sister-in-law, Marilyn Wubbenhorst; and many nieces and nephews. Dale served faithfully in church ministry for 40 years beginning with Campus Crusade for Christ, followed by congregations in Washington, Michigan, and California. In addition, his daily devotional ministry touched the lives of many. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Monday, October 30, 2023, at Bauer Christian Reformed Church, 4958 Bauer Rd., Hudsonville with Rev. Tim Holwerda and Dale’s brother, Rev. Art Vander Veen officiating. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Sunday, October 29, from 2-5 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW and from 10-11 am on Monday prior to the service at church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) Ultimate Impact Fund or Resonate Global Mission.

Pastor Dale had a significant impact on the quality of my intimacy with the Lord. I considered him a mentor. In a sermon at Bethany Church in Bellflower, CA, he made the comment, “God spoke to me and I heard him say…”. I asked him to meet with me to unpack what his experience of hearing God’s voice was like. What a blessing that meeting was to me! I have been attuned to the many ways God speaks, if we are listening, ever since. Pastor Dale also mentored me in my role as a leader. He shared with me a document titled, “Lessons I Have Learned About Leadership”, which was invaluable in making me a better leader. Pastor Dale also shared his daily meditations with me, which were a rich source of blessing, especially when I was serving as a missionary in the Philippines. I thank God for Pastor Dale and I pray for Edith as she mourns his passing and also celebrates his victory in Christ.

We had the privilege of living next door to Pastor Dale and Edith in Bellflower, California when Dale and my husband, Dan were serving Bethany Christian Reformed Church. Pastor Dale was the senior pastor and Dan was the youth pastor. In ministry and with our family, we appreciated Dale's support. Dale was so patient with my kids. My son especially thought Pastor Dale was there just for him. One time, the janitor befriend a personable, stray cat. We called her, "Leftovers" because all we fed her was leftovers. A tomcat chased Leftovers into the street and she got hit by a car. My son ran to church and got Dale out of an important consistory meeting to cry with him over the death of the cat. My daughter recalls making profession of faith with his guidance. Later, Dale and Edith attended her wedding in Spring Lake Michigan. Pastor Dale's sermons were so deep and impacting.
