Dakota “Kota” Poling

August 8, 2005 ~
February 13, 2026

Dakota “Kota” Allen Poling, age 20, passed away far too soon on Friday, February 13, 2026, surrounded by family and friends.

Born on August 8, 2005, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kota was the favorite - and only - son of Melissa Huizinga and Brian Poling. He was also the cherished little brother of older sisters, Emily and Brianna Poling.

Kota was known by those who loved him for his quick-witted replies, sarcastic humor, and bullheaded stubbornness. Despite never wanting to be the center of attention, he always had everyone in the room laughing. Kota attended Hopkins Public Schools and graduated in 2024. During and after high school, Kota worked for Puschel Farms, where he discovered his passion for dairy farming. He often referred to the cows on the farm as “his girls.” Kota also found joy in Packers football, dirt biking, fishing, and time spent with his friends. Kota’s big heart left a lasting imprint on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him.

Kota was preceded in death by his great-uncle, David Hawley. He is survived by his parents, Melissa Huizinga and Brian (Beckey) Poling; sisters, Emily and Brianna Poling; as well as his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, stepsiblings, and so many close friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of Kota’s life will be held on Sunday, March 1, from 2-5 p.m. at the F.O.P. Hall located at 1753 Alpine Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504.

My condolences to Melissa, Emily, Briana and grandparents. You guys have my prayers continuously. It was a pleasure to help take care of Kota the time I had with him. Boy was he funny.Mota kept me on my Toes & kept me with a lot laughs during our talks. There were a lot of memories we made. Anybody want to know who came up with the letter board idea for him to speak it was me.lol. We made history with that.Kota said a lot and you better had held that board up until he finished lol l. That was one thing he did not play about. We had so much during our time together. I will always remember you Kota may you rest in peace. P.s I don’t wear wigs that often anymore 🤣

Far too soon, so true. There are no words. Only the fierce shock of reality that goes on and on. Kota's suffering is now over. But for those still on this earth, Those still in their vessels, Another journey has started. But his suffering is done. Whatever one believes lies ahead for them Only time reveals. My heartfelt grief mingles with all those who now Remember Kota and his loving family Both near and far.

Melissa and family, Kota was a true fighter. There are no words I could ever say that would change this outcome, and if I could, I would without hesitation. Just know that you are all in my deepest thoughts and held close in my heart during this unimaginable time. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in the love surrounding you and in the beautiful memories that will always live on. Sending you strength, prayers, and so much love.
