Remembering Curtis F. Helmus

Curtis F. Helmus of Kentwood, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019 at the age of 52 years. He was a graduate of Grand Valley State University and Calvin College. His teaching career was shortened due to the effects of his 30 year battle with multiple sclerosis. He leaves behind his parents, Sid and Sonja Helmus; sister, Michelle Crysler; sister-in-law, Cynthia Olson; many uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie; brothers, Craig and Michael; grandparents, Fred and Rena Helmus, Frank and Jean Stevens. A celebration of his life will be held during a memorial gathering from 2 to 4 pm on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, PO Box 4594, New York, NY 10163-4594.

I remember Curtis as my "baseball buddy" from elementary and junior high school. We traded baseball cards, poring over a player's statistics and trade value. Curt's Dad took us to Detroit Tiger baseball games and that was a great experience. I remember that Curt and I played baseball each break time at school, even playing one time when the snow was falling! Our sympathies go out to the family in this time of loss.
