Charles L. “Charlie” Herr, age 78, of Grandville, MI and Naples, FL, who was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away unexpectedly and was carried away on eagle’s wings to his heavenly home on Sunday, June 25, 2023. Chuck proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was responsible for training medics to save the lives of countless service members who were wounded in Vietnam. After the Army, Charlie worked as a X-ray technician for Blodgett Memorial Hospital for 47 years. Chuck was also proud to have played football in college under the legendary coach John Madden. Growing up he also loved to surf while he lived in California. Chuck loved to read the newspaper and would read it cover to cover. Above all else Chuck loved his family and did whatever he could to provide for them. He is preceded in death by parents, Charles and Estella Herr; parents-in-law, Cyril and Helen Cairns; brother-in-law, Michael Pickem; and his friend, Robert “Turk’’ Coykendal. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 51 years, Sue Herr; children, Tabitha (Chad) Herr-Bush, Todd (Michelle) Herr; his very special grandson, Kristopher Herr; sister, Darlene Pickem; sister-in-law, Gail Spencer; and several nieces and nephews. He was also dearly loved by his cats, Buttons and Ralphie. A graveside service will take place at Grandville Cemetery on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 2:00 pm. A small gathering will be held at the family home following the burial. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Ann Arbor Ronald McDonald House or your local animal rescue.
