Remembering Charles “Chuck” Schellenberg
Schellenberg, Charles "Chuck" SCHELLENBERG: Charles “Chuck” Frederick Schellenberg, age 89, of Grand Rapids was taken home to his Savior on Thursday, July 12, 2012. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Leone; his daughter, Sheryl Schellenberg Struik; and his brother, Robert Schellenberg Sr. He will be remembered by his children, Larry Schellenberg, Mary and Todd Weston, Jim and Julie Schellenberg; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brother, Herman and Cheryl Schellenberg; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Leone Schellenberg, Nelson and Nellie Slachter, Elmer and Marian Slachter, Nancy Helmus; and his dear friend, Ruth Brightman. Chuck is a member of the Greatest Generation. As a World War II Vet, he hunted submarines aboard the destroyer, Harlan R. Dickson, in the Atlantic Ocean. After the war, he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1948, as an accounting major. His years at the U of M served as the foundation both for his career and his lifelong love of all things "Maize and Blue." He held season football tickets and attended as many bowl games as he possibly could. Many of his grandchildren hold dear memories of accompanying Grandpa and Grandma to a game at the Big House. And who will forget the "Hail to the Victors" when the doorbell was rung on Beaver Island? After graduating from the U of M, Chuck worked with Siedman and Siedman in Grand Rapids, later with American Box Board, then, to support an ever-growing family, he took the position as Plant Manager in Clinton, Iowa with Lord Baltimore Press. After several years, he moved back to the Grand Rapids area in 1966 and eventually started his own accounting firm, Schellenberg Accounting Inc. He grew the firm until his retirement in 1988: it exists today under the name of Corey, Murphy, and Harber. Throughout his career, Chuck was active in several civic activities. He was a member of the Wyoming Public School Board, he served as treasurer of Eighth Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, and he was a long-standing member and president of Kiwanis Grand Rapids South. Throughout his life, he added several feats to his title from the GRJC 1945 State Baseball Championship as a shortstop; he utilized his S.C.U.B.A. certification in both Hawaii and Australia; he could be found on Beaver Island fishing, playing tennis, tending his lawn, hunting, golfing, or taking island trips on his motorcycle with Leone at his side, and, often, a grandchild on the seat in front of him. He obtained his private pilot's license at the age of 60 and purchased a Cessna 170 to ferry himself and his family from Michigan's mainland to the family summer home on Beaver Island. In the winter, Chuck and Leone spent their time at their condo in Orlando, Florida on the Ventura Golf Course. While there, Chuck took many computer classes and volunteered his time to do taxes for AARP members in his community. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Sunday from 2-5pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Drive. Services and a celebration of life will be held at 11am on Monday at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 1700 Woodward SE, Grand Rapids, with Rev. Ann Conklin officiating. Per his request, Charles' body has been cremated, and his remains will be buried next to his wife, Leone, at the Grandville Cemetery, 3570 Prairie, Grandville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holland Home Raybrook Manor, 2121 Raybrook Street, SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. God Speed Dad, Grandpa, "Grape"-Grandpa, Beaver Island Grandpa, Uncle Chuck, dear Friend. We'll see you on the other side.
