Carol Joan Groot

​Carol Joan (Thompson) Groot, age 81, of Wyoming, passed peacefully at her home on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, surrounded by her kids. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Groot; son, Lorenzo Blair; parents, Irwin (Iola) Thompson as well as many of her siblings. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Lola Tol, Todd Blair, Janet (Al) Kiefer; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; first husband, Joseph Blair; brothers and sisters: Dorla West, Patty Slone, Alroy Thompson, Tim Thompson, Tom Thompson; many nieces and nephews. Carol grew up as one of 15 siblings with her parents, Irwin and Iola Thompson. Carol will be remembered for her strength, her generosity and kindness. She enjoyed making people laugh and opening her home to anyone in need without expecting anything in return. Carol cherished her years as a homemaker while raising her four children and also worked as a cook at Luther Village in Fulton Manor and at the Children’s Corner. She loved cooking for her friends and family and was famous for her popcorn balls by all who knew her. Some of her favorite pastimes included therapy trips to the casino with Lola and Chris, playing computer solitaire, gardening, watching hallmark movies, or taking her dogs Suzie/Rocky for walks with Chris and Travis. Most of her summers were spent camping with family where she also cooked meals. Her faith was very important to her and she enjoyed going to church. She will be greatly missed for her smile, friendship and love for her family and friends. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at River of God Church, 4607 68th St. SW, Byron Center, 49315 with Pastor Randy Vruggink officiating. There will be a light reception with cake and ice cream to follow the service. Burial will be held in Grandville Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to River of God Church.
