Carol Deters-Bogema

Carol Ann Deters-Bogema, of Jenison, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 24, 2023, just two days before her 94th birthday. After graduation from Lee High School, Carol worked as a dental assistant until her marriage to EJ Deters. Together they owned and operated Deters Restaurant in Hudsonville for several years. Carol was a devoted mother to her children and raised them on her own after EJ passed away suddenly in 1967. She married John Bogema 15 years later. They were happily married for 36 years during which they enjoyed traveling and spending time at the cottage with family and friends. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her much joy. Above all, her faith was important to her and she was a longtime member of Fifth Reformed Church. She will be greatly missed for her genuine kindness in words and in spirit, infectious smile and love for her family. She was preceded in death by her first husband, EJ Deters; second husband, John R. Bogema; siblings, Robert (Jane Ann) Formsma, Donald (Wanda) Formsma, Helen (Dale) Rozema, Jack Formsma; and brother-in-law, Peter Peterson. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David and Karen Deters, Debra Deters and Jeff Kolk, Mary Lou Bogema, Patricia Ann and Martin Vonk, Kay Ellen and Bruce Wolters; grandchildren, Erin (Bill) McDowell, Justin (Katrina) Deters, Abby (Ronnie) Nowicki, Tyler (Victory) Wolters; great-grandchildren, Emme, Liam, Raelyn, Leo; sister, Leanore Peterson; sisters-in-law, Joan Formsma, Gladys Kessel; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Rev. Jon Sherrill officiating. The burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Friday, April 28, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home as well as Saturday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Carol’s family expresses their gratitude to everyone at Waterford Place for their wonderful care and compassion during Carol’s 14 years of residence there. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Sunset Legacy Foundation or Faith Hospice.
