Remembering Carl Paganelli Sr.

Carl T. Paganelli, age 82, of Wyoming, passed away into the loving arms of Jesus Christ while surrounded by his wife and sons on Tuesday May 21st, 2019 after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Caesar and Josephine Paganelli, daughters-in-law, Christine and Cathy Paganelli, sister and brother-in-law Geraldine (Paganelli) Harris and Jack Harris.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Mary; sons, Perry, Carl and Dino; grandchildren, Carley Marie (Justin) Kristich, Crysta Paganelli, Brady, Jake, and Katelyn Paganelli, brother, Robert “Butch” (Connie) Paganelli, sister, Linda (James) Kozlowski.  Carl was a soft spoken, warm, loving, caring husband, father, and grandfather. He was devoted to his Catholic faith, attending and supporting Our Lady of Sorrows and St. John Vianney Catholic Churches. He lived a selfless life always giving back to others. Carl was referred to as the “godfather of Grand Rapids area officials” and was part of the West Michigan Officials Association for nearly 60 years. His on-field tenure included time with the USFL, World Football League and Arena Football League. He was the supervisor of officiating for the Arena Football League, Mid American Football Conference and the XFL. Carl was inducted into the Arena Football Hall of Fame and was also inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and in 2018 with his three sons.  Carl consulted and mentored many European officials, including the Italian Football Federation. He officiated high school, small college, USFL and World League of American Football. Countless NFL officials over the years have credited the Paganelli patriarch for his guidance, mentoring and leadership. Carl worked for many years at Consumers Power Co., Reynolds and Brown Sporting Goods, and Jones Sporting Goods. He also served his community by serving on the Wyoming City Council. He brought a stabilizing, common sense approach to city government. Carl valiantly served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy. He was, most of all, a supporter and mentor of young people who were involved in youth athletics. He was always involved in family athletic events, supporting, mentoring, and quietly cheering them on. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at St. John Vianney Church, 4101 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming, with Rev. John Vallier and Rev. Ted Kozlowski presiding.  Interment Resurrection Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Tuesday from 1-4 pm and 6-9 pm at the church, with a Rosary at 8 pm. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution in Carl’s memory can donate to Grand Rapids Community College “Paganelli” Foundation or Aquinas College Athletic Department, Christy Paganelli-Jaklinski Scholarship.

Dear Mary & entire Paganelli family. It is a very sad time hearing the passing of Carl T. . Our Deepest Sympathy .May his memory be eternal.

2 things I will always remember about Carl in relationship to Pinery Park Little League. The first is getting the Little League Regional Tournament for 1983 at our park. That was incredible because at the time it was very hard to get. The second in 2015 we had some financial issues that involved the City of Wyoming and our League. Carl stepped in and went to the meetings between us and the City of Wyoming. I believe that because he was a city councilman and a past PPLL President Carl understood both sides and it helped a lot. I will miss our phone and email conversations. Carl was a close confident and friend of Pinery Park Little League. Deep Condolences to the entire Paganelli Family.

Mary, Carly, Perry, & Dino.....Words can barely express the sadness I feel in my heart for the loss to your family and the loss of such as icon to the football world and to the lives of officials like me that Carl touched over the many years. His professionalism, leadership and pride in arena football set such high standards that one could only strive continuously to try to meet or earn his respect. "Bossman" thank you for the privilege you extended to me for many years, thank you for the trust you put in me to uphold the standards you set, and most of all, thank you for the honor of being your friend. Always in our hearts, Rg Detillier

Dear Paganelli family, I first met Carl when Dino was playing basketball at Rogers for Harry Hudson. I was covering a game for The Press and he introduced himself and thanked me for The Press' interest in the team. That started a long, wonderful relationship with a strong, kind, caring man and his incredible family. Writing stories about Carl and his three sons became a highlight for me in my 24 years at The Press. How is it possible that one family in West Michigan can produce four officials that are so successful at the highest level? Character and leadership. Perry, Carl and Dino are so accomplished that it's a surprise to me when they don't get a Super Bowl assignment. Carl was one of a kind. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences to his family. The Measure of Man Not "How did he die"? But "How did he live?" Not "What did he gain?" But "What did he give?" Not "What was his station?" But "Had he a heart?" And "How did he play his God-given part?" Not "What was his shrine? Nor "What was his creed?" But "Had he befriended those really in need?" Not "What did the piece in the newspaper say?" But "How many were sorry when he passed away?" Was he ever ready with a word or good cheer, To bring back a smile, to banish a tear? These are the units to measure the worth Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.

— Michele Croce

Mary, Perry, Carl, Jr., and Dino, It is impossible to accurately and fully express how much of an impact Carl T had on so many officials. He mentored so many officials for so long ... I believe his legacy will last for years and years. Carl was tough. fair, principled and so much more. No doubt the Carl T stories will go on a very long time. Like so many others, my life and officiating career has been richly enhanced by this wonderful and special individual. May he Rest In Eternal Peace in Heaven. With My Deepest Sorrow, Jim Corpora Whitehall PA

— Dan Richard

My deepest regrets to the loss of your husband, your father, your grandfather and a friend of all officials. Carl Paganelli had the innate ability to make both new and veteran officials feel good while he was "schooling them up" on how they could be better at their craft. Thank you, Carl, for allowing us to spend some very special time with you.

— Bene Lynn Benedict

There are no words to express how deeply saddened our family is for the loss of this wonderful man. He believed in faith, family and football (not always in that order!) and we miss him already. Our heartfelt condolences to Carl’s loved ones.

— Terri & Doug Valenti
