Remembering Bruce Scott

Bruce David Scott, age 71, of Wyoming, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly while recovering from pneumonia, surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Denise Diane Scott; parents, William and Beverely Scott; parents-in-law, Beverly Jean DeYoung and Jerome DeYoung; brother, William Scott III; and brother-in-law, John Way. Bruce will be lovingly remembered by his children, Tara and Bill James, Daniel Scott and Julie Baker, and Jana and Brandon Vugteveen; and his cherished grandchildren, Jacob, Jaylen, Austin, Connor, Kiersten, Makenzie, and Victoria. He is also survived by his sister, Sandy Way; siblings-in-law, Jamie and Dave Patchin, Janet and Tom Renton, Jack DeYoung, Dyan DeYoung and Ken Max; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Bruce was fortunate to meet the love of his life, Denise, at a young age, and together they built a beautiful life centered on love and family. They raised their three children—Tara, Dan, and Jana—with kindness, generosity, compassion, and unwavering support for one another, and the legacy they created will continue through their children and grandchildren.

A devoted husband, father, and grandpa, Bruce had a fun-loving spirit that touched everyone who knew him. He had a remarkable way of turning ordinary moments into cherished memories, filling them with laughter, stories, and jokes that will be lovingly remembered for years to come. His greatest pride and joy was his family, and he treasured every moment with Denise, his children, and his grandchildren. Whether he was tinkering on a project in his garage or lending a helping hand, Bruce was always ready to serve others with kindness, generosity, and a willing heart.

Bruce worked as a mechanic at Parker Brake and Valley Truck Parts before finding a career he truly loved with Wyoming Public Schools, where he worked for many years. In his free time, he enjoyed riding his electric bike along the trails around Wyoming, often hiding little treasures throughout the community in hopes of bringing a smile to a stranger’s face. He also enjoyed spending time at Gun Lake Casino, where he proudly—and often jokingly—claimed he had mastered the game of Keno. Bruce’s legacy is one of unconditional love, generosity, laughter, quiet acts of kindness, and while he will be deeply missed, the memories he created and the values he lived by will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know and love him.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. Relatives and friends may meet with the family for a casual visitation on Friday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. A graveside service for Bruce and Denise will take place at Grandville Cemetery following the service for those who would like to attend. Memorial contributions may be made to Jenison Christian School in honor of Bruce’s grandchildren.

I am missing you so much. I am so happy that we both had condos at Arbor Lake. I will never forget the good times when everyone got to sit out by your garage for at least 2 hours a day in the summertime and you would have your coffee ready for anyone that would stop by. I will miss your funny stories and the great times on holidays that we got to spend with our families. You will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. I love you Bruce..

— Sandy Way

There were three guys in my life that I worked with, that I had absolute fun time with. And if it wasn’t for them, it probably would’ve been a challenging time for me to come in. One of those guys was Bruce. First time I met him. I knew this guy was full of comedy. I can’t tell you how many times we played jokes on people during the summertime cleans at the schools. I loved his approach on life. Him and Denise were an absolute blessing to know. I was so sorry to read this. You have my deepest condolences. Bruce and Denise are and always will be a class act!
