Bruce E. Tompkins, age 87, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. He attended Creston High School and Ferris University. He was a veteran of WWII and served in the US Coast Guard. He loved sports; he played football, basketball and baseball on city and church leagues. His favorite teams include the Chicago Cubs and U of M football and basketball. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling. He took many fishing trips with his brother, Lowell and friends; his trips include Alaska, the Arctic Circle and Mexico. He also went with his brother on an African Safari. He also enjoyed getting together with his “Lunch Bunch Card Party” gang. Above all, he loved his family, even if they were not his own. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Lois (Ter Haar) Tompkins; daughter, Janice Lynn Tompkins; son, Michael (Mary) Knappen; daughter-in-law, Gail Mitcavish and cherished friend, Pat Parks; sister-in-law, Joan Rounds; special nephew and niece, Jeff (Carol) Rounds, Cathy (Eric) Rounds Russell; grandchildren, Cassandra (Patrick) Ten Hoopen, Ryan (Melissa) Knappen, Harry (Cindy) Lillie, Sara Lillie, Kristen Lillie; seven great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Freda Tompkins, Ida Tompkins; many nieces and nephews; special friends, George and Marlene Hyslop, Les and Jean Tacoma, Verl and Marie McManus. He was preceded in death by his foster daughter, Lorraine (Lillie) Hewey. Private services will be held. Interment Floral View Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.
