Billy “Randy” Gayle

April 30, 1970 ~
July 4, 2025

Billy “Randy” Gayle, age 55, of Grandville, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Friday, July 4, 2025.

Randy was a beloved son, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend to many. Known for his quick wit, warm personality, and deep passion for history and sports, he touched countless lives through his work, teaching, and everyday interactions.

A devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Pistons, Randy loved cheering on his teams with unwavering enthusiasm. His appreciation for the past and gift for storytelling made him a true history buff—always ready with a fascinating fact or tale to share.

For over 40 years, Randy was a fixture at Florentine Ristorante & Sports Bar in Grandville, where he worked alongside his sister Kelly, with whom he co-owned the restaurant for close to 30 years. His passion for connecting with people made Florentine more than a restaurant—it is a community hub, and Randy was at its heart.

In addition to his work at Florentine, Randy earned his master’s in business from Grand Valley State University. He was proud to serve as an adjunct professor at Grand Rapids Community College. Teaching brought him immense joy, and he was deeply committed to his students. He found purpose in guiding his scholars on their educational journey and took great pride in helping others grow.

Randy cherished his family and found joy in the simple things: watching Star Wars or Star Trek, playing cards, sharing meals, and captivating those around him with his stories. He had a unique ability to make people feel seen, heard, and welcomed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy and Bonnie Gayle. He will be lovingly remembered by his stepmother, Janet Gayle; his sisters, Kelly Gayle (Derek), and Holly DeHaan (Jason): his cherished niece and nephew, Noelle (“my little friend”) and Evan (“nephew of mine”), along with extended family, friends, students, and the countless others whose lives he touched.

Randy’s legacy will live on in the stories he told, the lessons he shared, and the many lives he brightened. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A private burial has taken place.

My deepest heartfelt sympathy to Bill's family. I was so shocked to learn of his passing today. In my role at GRCC as department secretary, I had the pleasure of having had many conversations with Bill about students, Florentine's, and life in general. He was always happy and upbeat and one of the hardest working people I've known. Bill had a great sense of humor and a bubbly personality that was infectious to all who knew him, and he always had a great story to share about something. Rest in peace my friend. You will be greatly missed!

What a devastating loss this is to the world when it seems that Randy had entered his prime of happiness in life. I knew him for what feels like a snippet now, in my college years working at Florentine‘s for he and Kelly, and he was so many things. Most especially, zestfully full of life. Always interesting to talk to, always had a smart comeback, always the guy you learned something new from every shift—and that big, warm smile has yet to leave my memory in 25+ years. My condolences to the family. He was a good dude. RIP, Randy.

So many thoughts and prayers for the family and friends that will deeply miss the special person that Randy was. Randy came into my life when I really needed a genuine and kind mentor - from taking some of his college classes to working along side him at Florentine's, he meant a great deal to me and I will forever be thankful for the impression he left on my life.

Where do I start??? I did not have a traditional niece-uncle relationship with this man. We saw each other every day at the Florentine. I could talk to him about anything from sports to my schooling. The countless stories and laughs we shared together. He was the star of every family gathering. I am truly heartbroken. Not only was he my Uncle, he was my best friend. Love and miss you, Uncle Randy. We will meet again someday.
