Remembering Beverly Lucile McDonald
McDonald, Beverly Lucile Beverly “Bev” Lucile McDonald (Biehl), 84 died on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in Grand Rapids, MI at Spectrum-Butterworth Hospital, from complications from a recent fall. Bev was born on October 19, 1929 in Grand Rapids, MI to Daniel George Poland and Sadie (Bunce) Poland. She was their only child. Bev graduated from Creston High School in 1947, where her social skills flourished, landing on the reunion committee for her class. Bev was married to her first husband, Frederick “Fred” Biehl for 25 years. They had two children together. He preceded her in death. Bev’s working life included employment through the Grand Rapids Public Schools as well as with a private educational consultant, Dr. Clay Coleman. She ended her career working for what was Crippled Children’s for 10 years. She got a chance to see families with disabled children, which encouraged her to teach her grandchildren about differences by bringing home stuffed animals that were missing limbs. After being single for several years, Bev met Lewis “Lew” McDonald through friends. They were married for 20 years. Through Lew, Bev gained three step-daughters, which added to her family circle,. They made her feel included and loved. Before marrying Lew, Bev decided to join the Catholic faith. She was confirmed in the faith at Christ the King Church. She and Lew attended both Blessed Sacrament in Grand Rapids as well as Christ the King Church in Howard City, MI. Bev is survived by her husband, Lewis McDonald; her daughter, Nancy (Douglas) Cameron of Kalamazoo, MI; her son, John Biehl of Grand Rapids, MI; her step-daughters, Judy (Pat Pinder) Peters of Jenison, MI, Maureen (Ken) Rutgers of Shelbyville, MI, Mary (Scott) Beckman of Wyoming, MI; two grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; six step-great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Bev at Spectrum Health-Blodgett, Continuing Care Facility and Butterworth where she also received Hospice services. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 am at St. Sebastian Church (Historic Church), 9408 Wilson SW, Byron Center with Msgr. Bill Duncan presiding. Interment Graceland Memorial Park. The family will receive relatives and friends Monday 4-7pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming and Tuesday 9:30-10:30am at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Spectrum Health Hospice and Christ the King Church in Howard City, MI.
