Betty Vande Griend

November 14, 1943 ~
December 28, 2020

Betty Ruth Vande Griend, age 77, currently of Allendale, MI was suddenly taken to be with her Lord and Savior on December 28, 2020. She was born in Hull, IA on November 14, 1943 and married Roger Vande Griend on December 31, 1962 on the USS Oriskany. They moved around and had several careers spending most of their lives in Iowa and Michigan. Some of the highlights include: running a restaurant in Rock Valley, working as custodian at both Western Christian High in Hull and at Calvin College in Grand Rapids for many years. Betty had a strong faith and was always witnessing to everyone. She was never afraid to share her faith, being more concerned that others learn of the Lord than there be an awkward moment. Betty was an avid quilter who prepared quilts for many family members. She enjoyed her iPad and especially playing Words with Friends. She recently found enjoyment in coloring in adult coloring books. Betty enjoyed her time camping with friends and attending Sight & Sound Theatre. Most of all, she absolutely cherished being with her family. Betty is survived by her husband of 58 years, Roger; children, Russ and Janna Vande Griend (West Olive, MI) and their children, Heather Iverson, and Ryan Vande Griend; Nick and Sonja Vande Griend (Harvest, AL) and their children, Elijah, Jacob, and Isaiah Vande Griend; Angie and Brad Todd (Lafayette, IN) and their son, Spencer Todd; Andy and Becca Vande Griend (Grand Rapids, MI) and their children, Josh, Ellie, and Hannah Vande Griend; five great-grandchildren whom she adored; sisters, Natalie and Ed Brummel (Sioux Center, IA), Donna and Glenn Vander Ark (Lafayette, IN), Lorna and Dennis Dykstra (Iowa City, IA), Deb and Harlan Moret (Tallahassee, FL); brother, Ed and Lenae Scholten (Pipestone, MN); stepfather, Ed Scholten; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Alvin and Marcia Vande Griend (Visalia, CA), Irma and Bernie Fedders (Orange City, IA), Ken and Wanda Van De Griend (Byron Center, MI), and Lyle and Lois Van De Griend (Orange City, IA). She was preceded in death by her mother, Irma Scholten; father, Merle Klay, and her in-laws, Andrew and Bernice Vande Griend. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, December 31, at First Allendale CRC, 5734 Country View Dr., with Rev. Matthew Nuiver officiating. Burial Allendale Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Wednesday from and 4-7 pm at the church. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Helen Devos Children’s Hospital.

Roger, we are so saddened by this news. Betty was very special to us. She was a great listener and cared deeply about the family concerns of others. You and Betty were a very special part of our Presbyterian breakfast club. We loved her very much and will miss her dearly.

When Rol joined the Choraliers We arrived at the church and I waited in the car while Rol rehearsed. Rol must have been nervous but so was I. Rog and Betty arrived after but Betty walked up to the car and introduced herself to me immediately. What relief to be included and welcomed. She introduced me to other Choraliers wives and invited me to sit with them. I am still grateful for her graciousness and winsome way with a stranger sitting in a car. Rog, thank you for sharing her with me. Trish Jager I will miss her smiling face in the audience and seeing her at your side.. " Know He will guide you wher'er you go". So sorry Rog. Rol

We have no doubt that Betty is joyously in the presence of our Lord! She would easily talk about her faith, and talk about their family. She and "Rog" were very devoted to each other, and the Lord.

Betty, I love you and with tears in my eyes I write this. We have lost a great lady and the Lord has gained one of our best. I know you will be looking down upon me and keeping me on the right track. I will do my best to listen to you in the wind, you just keep talking to me and don't ever give up till i see you again. For now you will be my spirit walking in death as you were in life. In Gods Name, Amen R.I.P. My Friend
