Bernard Vander Iest

Bernard Vander Iest, age 96, of Grandville, was called home by his Heavenly Father on  Sunday, November 30, 2025. Bernard was born in Siegerswoude, Netherlands. He was a skilled bricklayer for most of his married life, guided by his well-known motto, “Work hard now so you can enjoy life later.” He lived that out fully, embracing his retirement with gratitude and joy. He loved traveling and spent many winters in Arizona, where he found warmth and relaxation. Golf was one of his greatest passions, and he played anywhere and everywhere he could. Over the years, he proudly achieved three hole-in-ones and even won a car while competing in the Michigan Buick Invitation Open Golf Tournament. He also enjoyed woodcarving, creating pieces that reflected his patience and craftsmanship. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Betty Vander Iest; sister, Theressa and Hank Visser; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, John and Barb Leegwater, Arie and Polly Leegwater. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Donald and Nancy Vander Iest, Crystal and Gary Van Dyke, Bartel and Tereasa Vander Iest, Bernie Jay Vander Iest; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley and Bob Sawyer; and sister-in-law, Mary and Keith Beavon. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville), 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Rev. John Witvliet officiating. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery with Rev. Aaron Van Dyke officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Friday, December 5, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Faith Hospice.
