Amelia (Scarmack) Brumm, age 90, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Born March 9, 1928, she was raised in Farrell, Pennsylvania. Amelia graduated from Farrell High School in 1946. After graduation, Amelia was the first woman in her area to voluntarily enlist as a WAVE into the U.S Navy. She served during the Korean Conflict for four years as a Teletype Operator in Washington, D.C. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, she was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Korean Medal. She was a charter member of Women in the Military Service of America and is registered in the Women’s Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. Amelia married Dr. Lynn F. Brumm on June 30, 1951. They adopted two children, Nancy Lee and Lynn, Jr. During her time raising children, she received the Pennsylvania Society for Children Award (A Brace for an Ace) in recognition of outstanding volunteer service in the care of the handicapped. Later in life, Amelia completed a degree in social work from Michigan State University. She worked for the Department of Family Social Services in a role that included being a counselor, mentor to student interns and instructor. A prolonged period of personal pain in her life led her to a deeper faith. Out of this experience, Amelia authored two books, “The Voice of the Healer,” and, “The Message of the Healer,” which are prayers written in poetic form with corresponding Scriptural references. In recognition of becoming an author, Amelia was inducted into the Farrell High School Hall of Fame in 2006. Besides her love for writing, Amelia enjoyed gourmet cooking, golf, flower arranging, Bible Study and church. She was a regular attendee at River Terrace Christian Reformed Church in East Lansing, Michigan, and also attended Ridgewood Christian Reformed Church in Jenison, Michigan. Amelia will be remembered for her deep faith in Christ, her loving spirit through her gift of hospitality, her tender heart and for those in pain or in need. She also had a deep love for her country, family and neighbors. The family is grateful for the loving care she received from the staff at Porter Hills, Clark Retirement Community, Faith Hospice, as well as her adopted Ridgewood Christian Reformed Church family. Amelia was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew C. and Angeline (DiCello) Scarmack; brothers, Eugene N. Scarmack, Vincent N. (Dorothy) Scarmack; her husband, Lynn F. Brumm; and son, Lynn F. Brumm, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Lee (Evan) Boote; grandsons, Cameron Lynn (Hannah Capron) Boote, Ethan John Boote; great granddaughter, Naomi Amelia Boote; sister, Rosemarie Scarmack; brother, Andrew C. I only met Amelia once as her daughter, Nancy, was a wonderful friend of my sister, Grace. I received one of her books at that time. After reading her obituary here, I can see that Amelia had a wonderful influence on Nancy and has left a legacy of faith, caring, and great character qualities which Nancy shares. She has made the world a better place by the life she led.

Dear Nancy and Family, My heartfelt condolences to you on the passing of you Mother, Amelia Brumm.. I was fortunate to know and care for her for many years while she and Dr. Brumm lived in the Haslett area. She was a warm, intelligent, and caring woman. She was full of wisdom and full of faith. She touched and enhanced the lives of many in the Lansing and East Lansing area. My heart goes out to you. I hope Amelia and Dr. Brumm are reunited where they will be together for eternity.
