Alfred Richard Schulz Jr.

November 17, 2025

Alfred Richard Schulz Jr. age 93, of Rockford, Michigan, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2025, surrounded by love and welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Born on November 22, 1931, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Alfred lived a life marked by quiet strength, devotion, and faith. A soft-spoken and talented man, he dedicated himself to his family and to the Lutheran Church, where he served faithfully throughout his life.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1951 through 1955, during the Korean War. Upon honorable discharge, he became a devoted University of Michigan Wolverine, graduating in 1960 with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Design. He was also a member of the Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi. He raised his children and grandchildren cheering on the Wolverines and teaching them the “Hail to the Victors” fight song. His gentle spirit and steadfast character were a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew him. And his sense of humor—often laced with sarcasm—lives on in his children and grandchildren.

Alfred is survived by his children, Karen Morton (Cal), Kenneth Schulz, Eric Schulz (Barb), and Ellen Eggerding (Daniel); grandchildren, C.J. Morton, Chelsea Olson, Trevor Schulz (Sydney), Stephanie Schulz and her boyfriend Josh Holtz, McKenna Eggerding and her fiancé Samuel Brillinger, and Annie Eggerding; great-grandchild Isla Schulz and many dear relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Schulz (Hoffert), and his parents Alfred Schulz Sr. and Tannetji Schulz (Doorn).

Beyond his devotion to faith and family, Alfred will be remembered through the many watercolor paintings he created for his children, as well as pottery pieces and appliance designs from his career at Gibson Products during the 1960s through the 1980s.

The family is deeply grateful for the support of friends and community and finds peace in knowing Alfred’s faith has carried him home. His life of devotion, humor, and artistry will continue to inspire all who knew him, even as he rests in the Lord’s eternal embrace.

A funeral service will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 22, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church. A committal service will follow at Plainfield Township Cemetery, 6205 Packer Dr. NE, Belmont. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James/Immanuel (SJI) Lutheran School.

Dick was such a kind & great man that brought fun & laughter to wherever he was. Married to Dorothy who was cousin to my mom , Lorraine , they had many good times together. Our 2 families got together for many occasions & especially I remember the Christmas Eve get togethers we would have. After my Dad passed & then Dorothy I would try to keep in touch with Dick in person or by phone. He will be missed.

Dick and family have been on our mind the last couple weeks. My parents were Nextdoor neighbors for many years. So many wonderful memories of Dick and Dorothy as neighbors. Such wonderful people. Praying for comfort for your family during this time. Miss our Gateshead Friends. With love, Mullins family.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of my Uncle Dick. I will truly miss his calm wisdom. Unfortunately, I am unable to meet with all of you tomorrow. I have recently fallen and suffered a broken hip with complications. I am presently housebound. I want you to know I will miss you all. I will miss my uncle; a true Michigan Man. Go Blue

I’m a friend of Ken’s. I had the privilege of meeting Alfred and seeing him several times over the years when he would visit Ken. He was such a kind sweet man. I appreciated him so much when I started caregiving for my mother and he would visit with her like she was a dear old friend he had known his whole life. He was a rare treasure put on Earth from our loving God. Thank you Alfred for the footprint you left behind.
