Arthur Douglass Auburn

Arthur Douglass Auburn, 86, formerly of Fords, N.J., died on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at Legacies Assisted Living in Caledonia Michigan.  Born in Woodbridge, New Jersey, he was the youngest of three children born to the late James Hassel Auburn and Marguerite Earley Auburn. He was a graduate of Woodbridge High School, Class of 1952. After high school he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champlain and later transferred to Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, where he received his undergraduate degree in English.  In 1956, he married his high school sweetheart, and the love of his life, Barbara Jill Dunham.  The newlyweds moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas, where Doug served in the US Army as a Medic. Doug and Jill made their family home in Fords, New Jersey, where they raised their two children, Kim, and Ross, and three nieces, Leslie, Lisa, and Lizbeth, who joined the family 15 years later. Doug began working for the Oldbridge Township School District at Madison Central High School the first year it opened, as an English Teacher.  A few years later, he created the Psychology program, when he introduced Psych 100, and Psych 101, courses into the curriculum. Doug became a great teacher - the kind who positively impacted the lives of his students through the relevancy of the coursework he taught, as well as his ability to mold youthful minds and spirits with his humanity, humility, and great sense of humor. Always with an open mind and kind words, he became the teacher many students turned to in times of trouble, or for life advice. Over his Thirty-seven-year career, Doug accumulated hundreds of letters and thank you notes from students who credited him with being the teacher who put them on their life’s path, or, who helped them through difficult times.  In later years he was selected to teach a Holocaust program, and he introduced the Jewish Holocaust course into the curriculum as well. Doug was also chosen to teach the gifted and talented program; coached tennis; and ran a drug counseling program to help at-risk students.  The Auburn Family was introduced to sailing when Doug and Jill bought a sailboat and became members of the Raritan Yacht Club in Perth Amboy, N.J. There, he spent countless hours sailing aboard “Endorphin” and enjoying sailing trips with friends, volunteering at RYC and serving as Commodore.  Aside from being an active member of the Yacht Club, Doug was a voracious reader, consuming almost everything ever printed about his passion, WWII.  After retiring and moving to Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Florida in 2000, he and Jill joined the United States Coastguard Auxiliary, where they continued to volunteer. Doug taught the Boating Safety and Seamanship classes and was honored with the Buddy Birkitt award for outstanding service.  Later, Doug became a docent at the Mighty Eighth Airforce Museum in Pooler, Ga., where he continued to teach people about that amazing chapter of WWII, and again, with Jill at his side. Arthur Douglass Auburn,  leaves behind his daughter, Kimberly-Rue Auburn, of Fernandina Beach Fl.; his son Ross Dunham Auburn and daughter-in-law Dr. Ann Auburn, of Caledonia Mi.; two grandchildren, Jaccob Dean and Katie Dean-Tam;  nieces and nephews Lizbeth Overton, Leslie Overton, Lisa Overton, Leigh Overton Boyd, Julie Schauer, Susan Goldberger, Jay Auburn, Patty Auburn, Jeff Auburn, Amy Auburn and his older brother James H Auburn III. He also leaves a legacy of love and kindness.
The family plans to have a celebration of life gathering in Fernandina Beach, Florida, as well as in New Jersey at a future date.

Thank you, Mr. Auburn. I was one of his students (class '91). His advice hangs with me today, "move on and don't look back". I became a teacher and now I'm a counselor of children.

The last of the lunch gang? So sorry for your loss, Kim and Ross. The "boys" truly enjoyed their last sail before haul out. Now they can do it again.

I am one of Mr. Auburn's Psychology Students from 1977-78 school year. My heart is heavy as I think of his passing. He never knew how much his influence continued through my growth. I majored in Psychology and Education in my undergraduate years because of him, taught special ed for years, worked in the mental health world for more years as a trainer and educator, and now I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in MD with a group private practice that has 2 locations. I am also an instructor for other therapists. After HS I knew Mr. Auburn from the RYC where my parents were members and we would often see him and his son when we went out on my father's boat AHAVA and would stop for a meal at the club. His memory will live on for ever.

I was a student of Mr. Auburn's at Madison Central now Old Bridge High School in the mid 1970's and took his psychology courses. Today - as a psychologist and professor, I credit him with exposing me to the field and piquing my interest. He did this for a lot of us. Mr. A was always a great listener and humorist. Thanks you! RIP.

Like a shadow in the moonlight, Like the whisper of the seas, Like the echoes of a melody, Just beyond our reach. In the shadow of our sorrow, Past the whisper of goodbye, Love shines through eternity, A heartbeat from our eye.
