Larry Walker

Larry Walker, age 74, of Dorr, was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. For 45 years, he shared his life with his wife, Judy (aka  Woman). Together they raised Denise, Tammy, Rick, and Kristy and built a family filled with love, laughter, and memories that will carry on forever.

Larry is survived by his siblings: Anne (Thomas) Jameson, Roger (Lyn) Walker, Delbert (Debra) Walker, Marilyn Wert, Joann (Michael) Spratling, Alfred Walker, Penny (Timothy) Parmeter, Ronald (Carla) Walker, Raymond (Linda) Walker; and many nieces and nephews. He joins his parents, Alfred and Vivian Walker; siblings: George Walker, Robert Walker, Dean (Maria) Walker, Mary (Roby) Sheridan; and his brother-in-law, David Wert who preceded him in death.

Larry had a way about him. He could walk into a room and light it up, make a stranger a friend, and find a way to make people laugh even in the darkest moments. If you needed help, you didn’t have to wonder if Larry would be there. He would.

He loved fishing. He loved tinkering. He loved fixing things. He just loved being outside. And if he couldn’t fix something, he was determined to figure it out. That determination was just part of who he was. But what Larry loved most was people—especially his family. He loved being a dad and a grandpa, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for the people he loved.

Life with Larry was never boring. Somehow, even the simplest things became an adventure.  For instance shortly after being told he had months to live he made his “Woman” tow him home on a tractor behind his truck from the neighbor down the road. Looking back, that is just one of  many comical adventures and are some of the memories we will hold closest to our hearts.

Larry was the strongest man we’ve ever known—not just because of his strength, but because of his heart, his determination, and the way he kept going no matter what life put in front of him. We know there will be a thousand moments when we instinctively think, “I need to call Larry” And those will probably be the moments that hurt the most. But we hope that when we think of him, we don’t only think about losing him.

We think about his laugh.

His stories.

His stubborn determination.

His love of fishing.

His need to fix everything.

The way he helped anyone who needed him.

The way he could make a room feel lighter simply by being in it.

And we remember that we were incredibly lucky.

Lucky to have Larry as our dad.

Lucky to have him as Grandpa

Lucky to have him as a brother

Lucky to have loved him—and to have been loved by him.

We will carry him with us in every adventure, every laugh, every fishing story, and every time we pick up a tool to fix something that probably didn’t need fixing.

We love you. Until we meet again.

The family thanks nurses Darcy and Megan and Chaplain Jim from Holland Hospice for all their support, compassion, care and love. A special thank you to Dr. Stid for advocating on Larry's behalf.
