Vivian Elaine Baker

Vivian Elaine Baker, age 87, of Cutlerville, went to be with her heavenly Father, December 16, 2020. She was born July 4, 1933 in Byron Center to Herman and Bernice (Bronsink) VanKlompenberg. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Dr. Robert Baker, great granddaughter, Grace Baker; and sister, Yvonne Mason.

She will be greatly missed by her children (grandchildren): Randy and Dianna Baker (Justin and Jennifer Baker, Brittany and Case Ryzebol, Lindsay and Kurtis Heerema), Dr. Rodney and Jean Baker (Jonathan and Janna Baker, Luke and Mandy Baker, Nathan and Rachel Baker), Rochelle and Bill Lettinga (Tiffany and Jeremy Richmond, Bill Lettinga, Heather and Adam Diver), Rolene and Mark Hasper (Robert and Katlin Hasper, Erin Hasper), Dr. Reed and Sharon Baker (Sam and Emily Baker, Jacob and Alissa Baker, Zac and Laura Baker); 21 great grandchildren; sister, Phyllis and Gordon Mast, sister-in-laws, Jerene Baker, Ruth Baker.

Vivian attended Calvin College where she played on the basketball team and received her certificate to teach elementary school, which she did for one year. After marrying Bob, she spent her time taking care of her 5 children and following him to Colorado Springs for his army duty, and Minneapolis for his residency in psychiatry. Returning back to the Grand Rapids area (Cutlerville), she expanded her role to include teaching elementary physical education and coaching junior high girls’ sports. She also gave of her time in preparing for the annual Pine Rest sale day in the grove. She gave of her time and energy to Hillside Community Church, especially in the teaching of their children. Her greatest gift was in entertaining family and friends as she frequently offered her house as the meeting place. For many years she hosted family dinners every Sunday and excelled at making each of the grandchildren’s birthdays special for them.

A private family funeral service will be held 1:30 pm on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Hillside Community Church, 1440 68th St. SE, Grand Rapids with Pastor Daniel Bud officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillside Community Church Building Fund.
