The sweet spirit of Thelma Nienhuis, age 88, of Grandville, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, on Saturday, March 6, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Eva DeBoer; her first husband, Carl Aukeman; second husband, Vernon Nienhuis; and grandchild, Jeremy McGraw. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Karen (Richard) DeVree, Douglas (Joan) Aukeman, Kristine McGraw, James (Janice) Aukeman, Randall (Brenda) Aukeman, Shelly VanKoevering, Scott (Jayne) Nienhuis, Deb Wolfert, Sheldon (Carla) Nienhuis, Cindy (Douglas) Kalkman, Dave (Deb) Nienhuis; fifty-two grandchildren; sixty-one great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Thelma was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her greatest joy was to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Every child, grandchild, great-grandchild, and friend received a birthday card and Christmas card. Thelma was a registered nurse at Zeeland Community Hospital working in the surgical department for 29 years. Thelma loved to travel, especially to Cape Cod, MA, her home state. She loved quilting and loved to cook for her family. She was especially known for her fabulous chocolate chip cookies. Her favorite Bible verse was Isaiah 40:31, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” The family would like to thank the staff at Sunset Manor and Brookcrest Manor for the loving care that Thelma received especially during this time of COVID. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 9, at 11 am at Zutphen Cemetery with Pastor Curt Walters officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Bethany Christian Services.
