Theodore William Masterton, age 77, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2026. He was preceded in death by his son, Dan Masterton; parents, William and Dorothy Masterton; and sister, Donna Dunlap. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 47 years, Maryann; daughter, Katey; four grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws.
Ted graduated from Saginaw Arthur Hill High School (Class of 1966) and the University of Michigan (M.S.W., 1980). He dedicated his career to advocating for individuals living with mental illness. Beginning at Harbinger Health Agency in Grand Rapids, Ted went on to serve more than 30 years in community mental health programs. Throughout his career, he touched countless lives with his compassion and enthusiasm and helped pioneer the field of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT).
Ted’s devotion to his clients was rivaled only by his dedication to his family and his unwavering advocacy for those without a voice. His curious mind led him to pursue many interests, including photography, astronomy, history, reading, music, RC airplanes, computer science, and Dungeons & Dragons. His greatest joy in his later years was exploring the world through the eyes of his beloved grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 3215 4 Mile Rd., Grand Rapids. Relatives and friends may visit with the family from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. All are welcome to attend and share cherished memories of Ted.
