Sidney John Holwerda, age 71, of Hudsonville, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 27, 2019. Sid was blessed to be able to use his considerable knowledge and skills as a mechanical engineer throughout his fifty-year career in and around the Grand Rapids area, the last twenty five of which were spent as Chief Engineer and Senior Project Manager at Allied Mechanical Services. Although his contemporaries and co-workers would all agree his creativity and brilliance made him one-of-a-kind in his field, nothing made Sid happier than spending time with his wife Liz, the love of his life, and his five children, their spouses, and 13 grandchildren. Sid and Liz fell in love at Grand Rapids Christian High School, and continued their journey together to Calvin College and the University of Michigan. In recent years, Sid also enjoyed honing his woodworking skills, making special keepsakes for those he loved, camping, fishing, and attending various events for his children and grandchildren. Sid will be remembered as a servant of the Lord, a man of quiet but steadfast faith, who loved his wife and family deeply, intensely, and without end. Sid was preceded in death by his precious granddaughter, Samantha Joy Holwerda, and brother, Jack Holwerda; he will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Liz (Gyene) Holwerda; their children, Tim (Amy) Holwerda, Shelley (Dan) Dennis, Laura (Steve) Zeinstra, Chris (Sara) Holwerda, and Stephanie (Kevin) Broene; his 13 grandchildren; sister, Elaine Helmus; and brothers, Thomas (Carole) Holwerda, and Gerald (Nancy) Holwerda. Relatives and friends may meet with the family during visitation at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home at 4145 Chicago Drive SW on Sunday March 3 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. The Memorial service will be Monday, March 4 at 11am at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf, with Pastor Pat Binish officiating, followed by a private graveside service at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
