Sandy Katsma (VanArk), age 80, of Jenison, surrounded by family, was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on February 14, 2023. Born and raised in Wyoming, MI, she loved spending time with her family, grandchildren, and many friends. Sandy will be remembered for her devotion to God, zest for life, humor, and especially her smile that would light up the room. Sandy was a member of Fair Haven Ministries for over 55 years. She was a woman of prayer with a deep faith in God and compassion for others. She enjoyed going on mission trips to Alaska and New York with her husband, Bob, and her many friends. Sandy is preceded in death by her parents, John and Alyda VanArk; parents-in-law, Andrew “Bud” and Clara Katsma; sister, Gloria Slagter; brother, Bunk VanArk; brothers-in-law, Warren Nysson, Lloyd Slagter, Vic Katsma; and sisters-in-law, Mary Katsma and Molly Katsma. Sandy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her: her husband of 59 years, Bob Katsma; children, Susan (Chuck) Martinie, and Tim Katsma; sister-in-law, Norma VanArk; and brother-in-law, Russ Katsma. She was MiMi to Tristen and Ellie Martinie, and Grandma to Gabby, Allie, Maddy, Nick, and Brandon Katsma. They will always remember her for playing marbles, babies, cars, going frogging, baking, and especially for her love of shopping and going to the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. She will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Sandy had a special place in her heart for her Lee High School girlfriends, the Draco Drips. Sandy’s working career spanned a variety of jobs in customer service where her smile touched many lives-her favorites were Maleki Music, Michigan Bell, and especially Hair, Etc. from where she retired after 25 years of service. The family would like to thank the many nurses and staff at Vista Springs Holland Meadows for providing extraordinary care to Sandy and for the family support for over seven years.
