Gilbert Gene Lyon

Gilbert Lyon, age 89, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, June 19, 2026. He lived his life in Grand Rapids.  He grew up going to family places in Shepherd and to a cottage on Chippewa Lake.  He graduated from South High School in 1955 and attended Western Michigan for a year. While at South, he played football and baseball, football was his game though.  Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions.  He also followed all the sports and activities of his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. He loved spending time with family just talking and catching up. He loved airplanes and history, especially WWII era, watching movies, and sitting on his front porch chatting with friends and neighbors. He loved animals and had dogs and cats as pets throughout his life.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Lori (Mark) Dunny; son, David (Darla) Lyon; grandchildren: Joshua (Amanda) Lyon, Sara (Joel) Cartwright, Travis (Erin) Dunny, Nicole Lyon; great grandchildren: Ethan Cartwright, Eva Cartwright, Seth Dunny, Andrew Lyon, Taylor Lyon, Emma Lyon.

Memorial visitation will be held July 31, 2026, from 5-7pm and at 7pm there will be a Family/Friends remembrance gathering time at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park Ave. SW, Wyoming.  Those who wish, may make memorial contributions to Humane Society of West Michigan, St. Jude or Edison Christian Health Center.
