Family and friends are celebrating the long and well-lived life of Philip Peter Datema who passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at the age of 99.

Phil was a devoted father and friend leaving cherished memories for his children, Richard Datema (Donna) and Betsy VanKalker (Tim).  He was a beloved grandfather to David Kleiman, Joe VanKalker (Challen), Maggie Pallone (Dominick), Dan Kleiman, Charlie VanKalker (Elly), and Peter Datema (Christie) and a proud great-grandfather to Addison, Luke, Lou and Maxwell.  He will be greatly missed by his brother, Peter Datema (Nancy) and sister, Joyce Wilcox (Royce).  He was preceded in death by Genevieve, his wife of 72 years; daughter, Kathy Olinger, and siblings, Doris VanLann (Earl), Jane VanLaan (Earl), Nancy Fitzsimmons (Jim), Jerry (Eleanore) and Jim Datema (Phyllis).

Phil lived a life of faith and service, leaving an unparalleled legacy across his church, community and country.  He served as a Trustee and Sunday School teacher for many years. He shepherded the growth of Caledonia Township as supervisor, assessor and building inspector for over 35 years. A veteran of the United States Navy, Phil served as a pilot stationed at the Navy Station Great Lakes from 1943-1945.

Phil will be fondly remembered for his love of celebrations, especially his birthday. A dedicated patriot, he always honored Memorial Day, July 4th, and Armistice Day. Any occasion, whether it was a birthday, golf outing, holiday or softball game, was a good excuse for firing up the grill.  Phil’s home on Whitneyville Ave. was a regular stop for friends of all ages to share a beverage, a story and a game of cards.

Phil will also be remembered for his passion for baseball, traveling and cribbage. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing especially at the Seney Camp, entertaining on his pontoon boat, and enjoying an occasional round of golf.
