David Allen Kowal, December 19, 1959 (66) of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away on April 12, 2026, heaven-bound with his sister by his side. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David. He was raised in a Catholic family of 8 in a small home in Wyoming, MI, with humble beginnings. David was the second youngest of 6 siblings. He was born with a sense of humor. He was the fun one in the family and loved making people laugh and smile. He could not wait for November 15th, as his true passion was deer hunting. When he was a young man, his dad passed away from cancer at the early age of 50 years old. David took a job as a busboy to help his mom pay the bills.

David’s sons have fond childhood memories of riding in his big red truck when he had his own tree service business. He was an outdoorsman who wore flannel shirts and jeans and loved taking his family camping, fishing, and hunting. He loved watching football and was a Detroit Lions fan. Even when life challenged his health, David was a victor over his circumstances. David’s faith grew stronger as he grew older. He enjoyed attending church service, and he was joyful in praising the Lord. We loved David for his easy-going disposition. Months before he became ill, he declared he was going to heaven.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Alice May (Mursch) Kowal, his father, Bernard Dale Kowal, and his brothers, Bernard Jr. and Michael Kowal. He is survived by his daughter, Tasha Ver Strat; his sons, Dustin (Taylor) Kowal and Gideon (JoAnna) Kowal; his sister, Mary (Robert) Conner; his brothers, Greg, and Mark Kowal; and several nieces and nephews.

May you rest in peace in the arms of your Lord and Savior, Jesus. We will never forget your big smile, joyful spirit, and thankful heart.

Special thanks to Kristina, the ICU staff at Corewell Health, and all those who lovingly cared for him. His family gathered for a private time to say goodbye to David before his cremation. A graveside service will take place in May at Resurrection Life Cemetery in Wyoming, MI.
