Myrtle Ann DeJong, age 77 of Grand Rapids, was escorted into heaven by the angels on Monday, January 18, 2016. Myrtle was born Myrtle Ann Gritters on May 22, 1938 to Herman and Harriet Gritters in South Holland, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Bernard DeJong (2004), both of her parents and brothers, John and Robert (Bob). Myrtle is survived by her precious son, Rich (Mary) DeJong of Manton, Michigan and their children, Joseph, Cody, Jody and Brody; and her precious daughter, Eileen “Gabby” (Brian) Chapman of Cadillac, Michigan and their children, Kerri and Ashley DeVries, Ryan, Christian, and Katie Chapman. Myrtle’s heart was filled to overflowing and thanksgiving with the birth of her great-grandchildren, Quintin, EJ, Amara, Jax, and Addison. Myrtle was the oldest of seven siblings and her memory will live on in her brothers, Ed Gritters, Roger (Phyliss) Gritters, Don (Vicky) Gritters; her sister, Diane (Keith) Zigterman; her sister-in-law, Ellen Gritters; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Myrtle will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming with Pastor Dave Struyk officiating. Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-8 pm.
