Mary Jane Severson, aged 96 of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 30, 2016, happy in the knowledge of the love that surrounded her. She was born April 7, 1920 in Kalamazoo, daughter of Myrtle Margaret (Luby) Morford and Charles Leonard Morford. After graduating from St. Augustines in 1938, she went to work for Michigan Bell telephone company as a switchboard operator. While attending a dance in Battle Creek, she met Frederick William Severson II, who also worked for Michigan Bell. They were married in May 1944. Mary Jane and Fred raised five children: Karen, Bill “Tink”, Fred, Tom and Mike. Mary Jane spent many years working at Stekette’s as a phone receptionist. She also worked at Mary Free Bed in the same capacity. She loved to bowl and play cards. Her passion was watching sports. She loved her Lions, Tigers and Phoenix Suns…but especially the Cubs. If she was watching one of these games, and you called, she would tell you to call back…she was busy watching the game. Mary Jane loved her dogs, especially Burt and Corkie, who were her best friends. Mary Jane will be lovingly remembered by her children, Karen Severson Oele of Ludington, William “Tink” (Mindi) Severson of Wyoming, Frederick (Kim) Severson III of Alto, and Thomas (Annette) Severson of Midland; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and her dear friends, Judie Dowell and Marge Salamone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her son, Michael; her parents; sisters, Lucille and Marie; and twin brother, Jim. Remember her kindly and hug those you love a little tighter. If you would like to make a memorial contribution, please consider Faith Hospice or a charity of your choice. A private family graveside memorial service has been held at Resurrection Cemetery. Lastly the family would like to thank Faith Hospice and all the staff at Brookcrest, especially the nurses for the loving care they gave Mary Jane.
