Mary Irene Smith

Mary Irene Smith, age 97, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2015. She was born July 2, 1918 in Yale, Michigan to John and Molly Lavell and lived most of her life in Port Huron, Michigan. Irene was employed at J.J. Newberry Company and Mueller Brass. She retired from Bundy Corp. in Detroit after 23 years of service. She graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1938. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the League of Catholic Women, the Port Huron Hospital Auxiliary, and was a former member the Black River Boat Club. She was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Smith; sisters, Madeline Lavell, Helen Leavey; brothers, Joseph Lavelle, Francis Lavell, Patrick Lavell; and close friend, Tom Shevnock. She is survived by her grandchildren, Steven (Kristyn) Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Anne (Chris) Van Doeselaar of Grand Rapids, Michigan; great grandchildren, Mitchell, Kasey, and Kamryn Smith, Owen, and Alayna Van Doeselaar; daughter-in-law, Kathy Smith; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday 12 PM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1505 Ballentine Street, Port Huron, MI 48060 with Fr. Fredrick Bodde Celebrant. Interment will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yale, Michigan. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 11 AM–12 PM at the church prior to the service.
