
Mary Jo Geertsema, age 83, of Grand Rapids, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 14, 2025. Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She found joy in tending to her garden and had a special way of making her grandchildren feel loved—always ready with their favorite treats. Mary cherished spending time with her family, especially when it came to playing games. Despite the health challenges she faced in recent years, she maintained a positive spirit and unwavering strength. Above all, her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her in all she did. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Lucille Bartels; husband, Martin Geertsema; brothers, Larry Bartels, Bob Bartels; brother-in-law, Bob Gaunt; and sisters-in-law, Anna Van Polen, Martha Zuiderveen. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Susan and Scott Moelker, Cathy and Mike Walters; grandchildren, Rachael and Daniel Miersma, Mary-jo and Jon Visser, Jonathan Moelker, Kaela Walters, Andrew Moelker, Alex Walters; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Gaunt, Kay and Tom Judy; sisters-in-law, Betty Bartels, Jan Bartels, Barb and Bob Lee; brothers-in-law, Hubert Zuiderveen, Ken Van Polen; and many dear friends from Edison Christian Living. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at the Edison Christian Assisted Living Building in the Activity Room on the first floor, 1010 Edison Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, with Chad Boorsma and Rev. Henry Admiraal officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, July 29, from 6-9 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. A private family graveside service will be held at Winchester Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Edison Christian Assisted Living or Faith Hospice.
