Modena (Johnson) Allen, age 86, peacefully passed away on October 13, 2026, surrounded by her cherished loved ones. Her life was marked by faith, timeless beauty, strength, wisdom, and a love that will continue through generations. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, to Raz Johnson and Evie Short, Modena was one of seven children. Her family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the mid-1950s, where she graduated from South High School in 1958. Raised with strong values of faith, education, and perseverance, she carried those principles throughout her life. Her name, meaning “a woman to be admired,” reflected both her striking beauty and her remarkable character. Modena accepted Christ at an early age and remained grounded in her faith throughout her life. She was a devoted mother who taught her children the importance of education, personal responsibility, perseverance, and treating others as they wished to be treated. She dedicated more than four decades to Grand Rapids Public Schools, serving students and colleagues in various educational settings. Her commitment to helping others learn and grow reflected her belief in the power of education and the importance of recognizing each person’s potential. Classy, confident, outspoken, and full of life, Modena was a woman whose presence was unforgettable. She enjoyed music, dancing, art, reading, puzzles, basketball, and physical fitness. Family was especially important to her, and she treasured holiday gatherings, preparing generous meals and homemade baked goods. Her beloved banana bread remains a sweet reminder of the love she shared. Modena was preceded in death by her husbands, Jerry Howard Lewis, Bobby Lee Gipson, and Edmond Allen; her son, Victor Howard Lewis, who passed away in 2021; and her six siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Penelope Bélanger, Vernon Lewis, and Melanie Gipson; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a loving extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Modena’s legacy lives on through the family she raised, the lives she influenced, the traditions she created, the faith she cherished, and the lessons she passed down. Her love and wisdom will continue to guide the generations who follow.
