Mae Hoeksema, dear wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, went to be with her Lord on May 22, 2024.
Mae was born in Hudsonville, Michigan to Clarence and Elizabeth Vredeveld on May 17, 1926. She and Gerrit Hoeksema married in 1946 and celebrated 71 years of marriage. Together they raised four children and were active members of Dennis Avenue CRC, Mayfair CRC, and Ridgewood CRC in Jenison. They volunteered countless hours for JAARS Wycliff Bible Translators in North Carolina. Mae and Gerrit lived a life of Christian service, dedicating many hours over the years to the Georgetown Senior Center’s project of creating beautiful quilts for charitable organizations. Even in her last years at Sunset Retirement Home, Mae went out of her way to bring a smile to others by way of her encouraging words.
Mae was predeceased by her loving husband, Gerrit; her beloved son, Terry; brothers Jim, John, Harvey, and Wesley, and sisters-in-law Eileen, Esther, and Ruth. She will be lovingly remembered by her children and grandchildren: Ron and Lyn (Becky and Andrew, Steven and Becca, Emily); Joyce (Tim and Melanie, Joel and Robin, Leah, Samantha); Marcia and Dave Vruggink (Beth and Rob, Dawn and John); Bob and Brenda (Laura and Jeremy, Craig and Coe, Nick and Sarah); 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Gene Vredeveld, sister, Joyce (Richard) Stienstra, and sister-in-law, Joan Vredeveld; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Clarence Schipper.
Mae’s family thanks all of the wonderful staff at Sunset Retirement Home and Corewell Health Hospice for the exceptional service and care Mom received.
A celebration of Mae’s life is scheduled for 11 am on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at MKD Funeral Home, 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville. Relatives and friends may visit with the family starting at 10 am. Those who wish may send contributions to Sunset Legacy Foundation.
