Louis Dale DeYoung

Louis Dale DeYoung, age 92, of Grand Rapids was welcomed to his Heavenly home on Saturday, October 26, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth DeYoung; sister, Delores Engels; daughter-in-law, Lori DeYoung.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 69 years, Barbara; his sons, Steve and Wendy, Tom and Linda, and David; four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Lou founded Lou DeYoung’s Market Basket in 1956. He was an institution to the Wyoming business community and passed that legacy to his sons, Steve (Steve’s Big Top Market), Tom (Tom DeYoung’s Engine and Mower), and Dave (Batteries Unlimited). Lou was a devoted and active member of Central Reformed Church, serving on the Consistory, Deacons and Finance. Lou graduated from South High School and Davenport College. He valiantly served in the U.S. Navy and served on the aircraft carrier, USS Point Cruz during World War II. His service in the Navy created a love of all things nautical and especially his beloved steamboat SS Ramona, which he sailed on Gun Lake. Lou was recognized by the National Grocers Association for his many years serving his customers. One of his favorite activities, even after retirement, was to visit the store and talk to his customers or help one of his sons with a project or delivery. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 31, 2 pm at Central Reformed Church, 10 College Ave. NE, Grand Rapids with Rev. Steven Pierce officiating. Interment Grandville Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday, October 30, from 3 - 6 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Central Reformed Church.
