Ruth Ubels, age 75, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully after a four year battle with cancer on Saturday, July 25, 2026. Ruth was a very independent woman who loved spending time outdoors and learning about nature. She dedicated her career to teaching, serving as a science and outdoor education teacher with Grand Rapids Public Schools. Ruth loved working with children and sharing her passion for the natural world with them. She also adored her dogs, especially her beloved Golden Retrievers, who were lifelong companions. She would often bring them to school to introduce them to her fourth-grade students.
Ruth's love of nature also led her to volunteer with kangaroo research in Australia for two summers, where she made wonderful memories and formed lasting friendships. She also enjoyed her summers as a naturalist at Camp Roger, an experience she treasured. Ruth was happiest enjoying the comforts of home and walking her dog and enjoying her neighbors, though she also cherished the occasional opportunity to travel and make memories with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Engbert and Edith Ubels; step-father, Hero Bratt; brother, Ed Ubels; brother-in-law, Bill Kuipers.
She will be lovingly remembered by her siblings, Larry and Char Bratt, Joannie Crockett and Dan Byrne, Marie Kuipers, Grace and Bob VanTimmeren, Esther and Dale Kuiper, Jennifer and Jack Waterway; sister in law, Ginny Ubels; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held privately at a later date. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Camp Roger.
