December 18, 2020

Lawrence Visser, age 98, of Grand Rapids, went home to be with his faithful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, December 18, 2020. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 plus years, Johanna and their son, Kern. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Sandra and James Heemstra, Jane Visser, Ron and Esther Visser, Donna and Mike Holtvluwer; 9 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren. Lawrence was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who cherished and was proud of his family. He will be affectionately remembered by his family who have often remarked about the special heritage that their parents had given them. He could analyze and fix just about anything. In the early days of WWII there weren’t tractors available in his farming town, so he ordered the parts and put them together to make his own tractor. Shortly after marriage he was drafted into the Army and sent to Germany, where he drove a Sherman Tank. It was his faith that carried him through that war and brought him back to Minnesota, where he and his wife grew their family to 4 children. After moving to Michigan, he worked many years at Wittenbach Sales and Service in Lowell. The family has many fond remembrances of how Dad would whistle while walking along and doing handyman chores around the house. Lawrence served in many capacities in his church, demonstrating to the family a strong and quiet faith firmly rooted in his belief in Jesus. In retirement, he lived out his dream of traveling across the US and spent more than 11 years living in their trailer, visiting 47 of the 48 contiguous states. A graveside service will be held at Findlay Cemetery in Ada with Rev. Doug Wood officiating. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Holland Home.
