Julia Mae Groulx

Groulx, OP, Sister Julia Mae, born Catherine Julia Groulx in Munger, MI died on July 27. She was 98 years old and a Dominican Sister for 74 years.

Sister Julia Mae received an MA in Religious Education from Aquinas College and an MA in elementary school teaching from Western Michigan University.

Sister Julia Mae served as a teacher in Muskegon, Grand Rapids, Beal City, Carrollton, Saginaw, Ravenna, Beaver Island, Melvindale, Belen, Alpena, and Bay City. Retiring from the classroom, Sister Julia Mae became coordinator for religious education and pastoral ministry at St. Mary, Carson City. She also was the bereavement coordinator for SS. Peter & Paul Parish, Ionia.
Sister Julia Mae’s love for travel took her to many places around world. Among her highlights was teaching at the Heisei Foreign Language Institute in Japan. Before returning home she visited Australia. She finished her traveling adventures with a pilgrimage to the Lands of Dominic.

Finally, she retired to live at Marywood and served as campus photographer. She had many hobbies and interests, including crocheting, knitting, calligraphy, sewing, and embroidering.  Many of her quilts and crocheted table toppers were sold at the Marywood Health Center gift shop, when it was open.
Sister Julia Mae is survived by her sister-in-law, Janice Groulx, nieces, nephews, her first cousin in the community, Sr. Julia Nellett, many friends, and members of her Dominican community.

Sister Julia Mae will repose at Marywood Chapel of the Word, 111 Lakeside Dr. NE, with visitation on Tuesday, July 30, from 6:00-7:00 pm followed by a Remembering Service at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 31 at 10:00 am at Marywood Chapel of the Word. Sisters, Family, and Close Friends are invited to join us in person for the Remembering Service and Funeral. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials in Sister Julia Mae’s name may be made to the Grand Rapids Dominican Sisters.
