John (Jack) Edwin Hartman

John (Jack) Edwin Hartman, age 92, of Holland, passed away on June 2, 2025. Jack was born on November 11, 1932, to Albert and Mildred (Evans) Hartman in Monterey Township, Allegan County, Michigan. He was the youngest of three children, after sisters Nellie (Green, Weber) and Mary (Langlan). Jack graduated from Allegan High School in June 1951. On July 10, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart, Deane Olcott. Together, they had five children. Jack farmed until 1963 and then moved his family to Holland, MI when he started his engineering career with Big Dutchman. Jack and Deane were divorced in 1972. Jack married Carlene (Myrick) Baldwin in 1973, and gained two stepchildren. Jack and Carlene were married for 52 years, until the death of Carlene on March 9, 2025. In 1976, he left Big Dutchman when the opportunity to start and co-own the bulk material handling systems business National Bulk Equipment, became a reality. He worked full time at his company until he sold it in 1990. Jack was an engineer and innovator and developed many patents in the livestock feeding and bulk plastics handling systems. Jack returned to Big Dutchman and worked in Product Engineering until he retired in 2004. Jack was a Master Beekeeper and began his love of beekeeping in 1955. He continued to keep bees for the next 70 years and was an active member of the Holland Area Beekeepers Association. Jack enjoyed fishing on Lake Michigan, and hunting and fishing in Michigan, Colorado, Alaska, and Canada. In retirement you could often find him at the Dutch Delight coffee shop with some of his many friends. He volunteered and worked tirelessly for Rose Park Reformed Church. Jack helped build the Macatawa Fish Cleaning Station on Ottawa Beach Road. He lived a lifetime of example and service to others. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, delicious honey, smiling eyes, and in-depth knowledge of many subjects. Jack is survived by Scott and Pam Hartman, Brent and Jennifer Hartman, Kim and Jim Mentzer, Julie and Mike Magliocchetti, Chris Bullinger, and Cricket Cole; 16 grandchildren; and many, many beloved great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Carlene, daughter Terrie Hartman Bullinger, son John Hartman II, stepson Jeff Baldwin, and great-grandson Jameson Mather. Visitation and the memorial service will be held on June 28, 2025, at Rose Park Reformed Church, 14241 Rose Park Drive, Holland MI 49424.  Visitation from 10:00-10:45am, and the service to start at 11:00am, with a lunch following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Hand2Hand program at Rose Park Reformed Church. The family also thanks Comfort Keepers and Hospice of Holland for their wonderful care and support of Carlene and Jack, and the whole family.
