John Charles Mackus

John Charles Mackus, age 86, of Hudsonville, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 16, 2021, after a tragic fall causing a head injury and is now home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. John was a kind and loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa who was blessed with a great sense of humor. He had a gentle personality and contagious smile that was evident to all who knew him. John proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He retired from Steelcase after over 30 years of faithful service. Following retirement, he continued to be active working at the Grand Rapids Auto Auction. John loved the outdoors, manicuring his lawn and landscaping. John was blessed with the gift of music, singing in church, and men’s chorus. Above all, his legacy of faith and family will be forever cherished. He preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jo; daughter, Laurie Jo VanDyke; sons-in-law, Reg Stroven, and Ron VanDyke; grandson, Grant Holthof; great-grandson, Charlie Wright; He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Harriet Van Dyke-Mackus; children, Vicki (Stroven) and John Hamelink, Julie and Dan Holthof; Harriets’s children, Rog and Linda Van Dyke, Rick and Nancy Van Dyke, Ron and Laurie Van Dyke, Kim and Randy Bolitho; grandchildren, Nicole and Billy Wright, Reid and Amber Stroven, Jonathan Van Dyke, Lauren and Austin Bouman, Paige and Michael Harley, Parker, Porsha, London, and Pierson Holthof; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Chuck and Carol Mackus, Boyd and Ellie Mackus, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 6 pm on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Cornerstone United Reformed Church, 6442 36th Ave, Hudsonville, with Rev. Philip Vos officiating. Burial Georgetown Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday 4-6 pm prior to the service at church.
