James R. Datema

November 1, 1927 ~
January 22, 2026

James R. Datema, 98, of Caledonia, passed away on January 22, 2026, with his family at his side.

Jim was raised on a farm in Caledonia, where he graduated from High School in 1945. He then joined the United States Army, was stationed in occupied Japan, and became the company clerk.

Jim knew that farming was not his career choice, instead working as a carpenter for several years, before taking a job with a commercial concrete company. As a Project Superintendent, he traveled from New York to Florida and throughout the mid-west, building parking ramps, hospitals, libraries, office buildings and high-rise condominiums. In his retirement years, he delighted in his grandchildren and great grandchildren, teaching them songs and playing card games. He also volunteered his time on construction projects, “which didn’t pay very well”.

Jim was generous and kind. He loved treating his family and friends to dinner every Thursday, at Shepards Grille, where he always ordered perch. His kind nature included giving generously, lending his tools, and offering quiet encouragement.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Phyllis (Charon); daughter, Marcia; grandson, Brian Basarabaki.

Jim will be deeply missed by his daughters, Sharon and Allen Baker, Jan and Terry Boone; grandchildren, Brad and Kate Baker, Julie and Lance Zaagman, Jamie Basarabski, Josh Boone; 9 tremendously talented great grandchildren; and siblings, Phillip Datema, Eleanore Datema, Peter and Nancy Datema, Royce and Joyce Wilcox.

Visitation will be held at Gaines Church, 1612 92nd St, Caledonia, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 10:00 am with a service to follow at 11:00 am.

It was Jim’s wish that memorial contributions be made to Gaines Church
