Sam DeGroot

Sam DeGroot, age 87, of Grandville, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Sam dedicated more than 35 years to serving students and families as a social worker with Wyoming Public Schools. In addition to his professional career, he operated a painting business during evenings, weekends, and summer months. A man of deep faith, Sam was slow to anger and eager to share thoughtful advice. He faithfully served his church by teaching catechism, serving on council, and contributing as a board member for Calvin Christian Schools. His kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids were the joy of his life. 

Sam will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Sharon; children, Jim and Julie DeGroot, Jerry and Michelle DeGroot, Jason DeGroot; grandchildren: Jeffry and Emily DeGroot, Cassi and Mitch Overweg, Megan and Matt Deaton, Zach and Emily DeGroot, Matthew and Sarah DeGroot, Troy and Anna DeGroot, Blake and Jessica DeGroot, Madeline and Jordon Lambert, Lucas and Annie DeGroot; 19 great-grandchildren with one more soon to arrive; siblings, Renze DeGroot, Anne and Dan Doorn, Agnes Keegstra; sister-in-law, Rosemary Vroon, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sons, Jeff and Joel.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Calvary Christian Reformed Church, with Pastor Bob Huisman officiating. Burial will take place at Grandville Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Wednesday, July 8 from 6-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW.
