
Hilbert (Hib) Gort, age 97, of Jenison, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 4, 2020. Hib spent his entire life in Wyoming, MI with the exception of the three years he gave for his flag and country. He fought in the Pacific and earned two bronze battle stars along with a Philippines Liberation Medal. After discharge, he began a 40 year career with Michigan Bell Telephone Company. With his wife, Helen, they began their family, going on to have five children. Hib spent many years doing volunteer work for the Telephone Pioneer Club. He was a member of Lee St. CRC since 1927 where he served several terms as office bearer over the years. After 65 years of marriage, Hib was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 2009; and also preceded by a son, Steven. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Judy Portis, David and Sandra Gort, Andy and Beth Gort, Keith and Jan Gort; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Mag Gort; several nieces and nephews. A private funeral service will be held on Friday, July 10 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Rev. Kent Rottman, officiating. Burial Grandville Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Friday from 10 to 11:45 am prior to the service at the funeral home.
