Hellmut Schmid

Hellmut Schmid, age 92 of Wyoming, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, November 7, 2015. Known to many as the “Candy Man,” Hellmut immigrated from Germany to the US at the age of 5. He served in the US Army during WWII, earning the Purple Heart. He met his wife, Maria in Germany after the war. He retired after 36 years, from Knape & Vogt, where he was known as “Shorty.” Hellmut and Maria were members of Calvary Church for over 50 yrs. Preceding him in death are his son-in-law, Dave Spanjer, sister, Frieda Kirschner and brother, Karl Schmid. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Maria; children, Darlene Spanjer, Dorothy (Drayson) Doyle, Fred (Karlene) Schmid, William Schmid, John (Pam) Schmid, David Schmid; grandchildren, Robert, Paul and Jason Brown, Dan (Audra) Doyle, Don (Janelle) Doyle, Kayleen Schmid, Josiah Schmid; 6 great-grandchildren, Brianna Brown, Ashlynn, Drayson, Daxton, Deklen and Avi Elle Doyle; brothers and sisters, Henry (“Heinie”) Schmid, Eugene Schmid, William (Barb) Honderd, Ruth (David) Sherman, Eleanor Joldersma. Funeral services will be held 11am Saturday at Banner of Christ Church, 1111 68th St SW, Byron Center with Rev. Josh Mateer presiding. Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, The family will meet relatives and friends Friday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming.
