Helen Smits

Mrs. Helen Smits (nee Bergsma, Bos, Moelker), age 91, was called to her Lord, Savior, and Sustainer on Sunday, June 25, 2017.   She was preceded in death by her husbands, John Moelker and Robert Smits; brothers, Garrett Bergsma, Willard Bergsma; sister, Nellie Lenger.  She is survived by her daughter, Kathie (Bos) and Gene Pearson; stepsons, Gordon (Donna) Moelker, Larry (Marcia) Smits, Rev. Lee (Marcia) Smits, Bob (Marica) Smits, Randy (Dawn) Smits, Ron (Tammy) Smits; precious granddaughters, Kristen (Dean) Veltman, Becky Pearson, Lauren (Eric) Schut; the sweethearts of her life, great grandchildren, Hannah, Drew, Emma, Seth, Austin, Brookelyn, Blake, Kaden; many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.  Helen taught 4^th grade for many years in the Grand Rapids Public School system and served the Lord all her life, especially in children’s ministries, including several short-term missionary trips to Brazil.  Her deep faith in the Lord and sure hope of eternal life have been her sustaining strength and will continue to be an example to all of her family.  During the past 3 ½ years, Helen enjoyed the activities and friendships as a resident at Christian Rest Home and was always very appreciative of the loving care she received.  Funeral services will be held Thursday 11 am at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, with Rev Gary Leyendecker and Rev. Gene Pearson officiating.  Interment Grandville Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday from 2-5 pm at the funeral home and on Thursday from 10-10:45 am at the funeral home prior to the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Christian Rest Home Association.
