Harriet Mae (Schut) Laninga, age 91, of Grandville, was welcomed into the loving arms of her faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. She now rejoices with her son, David, in Heaven.
Harriet was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Above all, she was a servant of God and deeply desired that all her family walk with the Lord.
Harriet was the eleventh of twelve children born to Gerrit and Nellie Schut and was raised on a farm in Hudsonville. She often spoke with gratitude about her strong faith heritage, especially the example of her praying mother.
She enjoyed her daily walks and could often be seen walking all over Grandville.
Harriet and Art also treasured their time in Holland, including the beach, the channel, Lake Ranch, The General Store, and Holiday Haven.
Above all, Harriet deeply loved her family. She cherished time spent together, especially Wednesdays at the pool in Holland with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those special moments created lasting memories that will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
She will be missed by her devoted husband of 70 years, Art Laninga; children, Kathy and Chris Weller, Doug and Sandy Laninga; daughter-in-law, Tamie Laninga; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rachel and Matthew Scholten (Jude, Rhys, Wells, Wade), Sarah and Scott Hekstra (Frances, Abel, Archer, Hayes), Elizabeth and Jared Van Vels (Stella, Iris, Harrison), Christina Weller and fiancé, Andrew Berry, Danielle Laninga, Stephanie and Joel Gerweck (Sanjarie, Ezekiel), Tyler Laninga, Michelle Laninga; sister, Marcia Doezeman; sisters-in-law, Linda Schut, Arlene Schut; brothers-in-law, Ken and Judy Laninga, Robert Venema; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to thank the caregivers at Rivertown Ridge for the loving care shown to Harriet over these last years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 3, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Rev. Calvin Compagner officiating. The burial will take place at Winchester Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
