Harold Jay Hommerson, age 88, of Jenison, was carried into the loving arms of Jesus, his Savior, on Saturday, January 1, 2022, after a heroic battle with cancer. Harold, or “Doc,” as he was affectionately called by his friends, was a humble, sociable, and godly husband, father, and grandfather. After medical school graduation, Doc was the town doctor of Hamilton, then later he became a pathologist in Grand Rapids. Upon retirement, Doc enjoyed golfing, photography, and doting on his four grandsons. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Hommerson; his wife of 53 years, Shirley Hommerson, who passed away in 2008; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Roger and Mary Schreur. Doc will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 8 years, Phyllis Hommerson; his three daughters and their husbands, Julie (Mike) Lindeman, Jayne (Mark) Tanis, Suzie (Jeff) Keller of NC; his four grandsons and their wives, Jaydon (Kerri) Lindeman, Jordan Tanis, Jacob (Meredith) Keller, Jonathan (Sarah) Keller; niece, Anne Schreur; sisters, Marilyn (Jay) Kool, and Joan Koop. Phyllis’s two sisters, Ardie Dannefel and Sharon Brink loved and admired Harold, along with Phyllis’s six grown children and their spouses: Debbie (Dale) Brown, Kevin (Ruth) Nagelkirk, Cindy (Brian) Overbeek, Keith (Debbie) Nagelkirk, Kelly Petroelje, and Amy (Mario) DisCesare; and all of Phyllis’ grandchildren and great-grandchildren became special to Harold as well. A private burial took place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. A Celebration of Harold’s life will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11 am at River of God Church, 4607 68th St. SW, Byron Center with Pastor Randy Vruggink officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family for an hour prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Kindred Hospice, River of God Church or a charity of choice.
