Gary Doornbos

October 1, 1950 ~
March 19, 2021

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gary Ray Doornbos announce that he peacefully entered his heavenly home on Friday, March 19, 2021. Gary was born in Grand Rapids, MI on October 1, 1950 to Kenneth and Patricia (Austin) Doornbos, who preceded him in death along with his in-laws, Ted and Karen Stephan. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce Doornbos, Ron Doornbos, and brother-in-law, Steve Steigenga. Gary attended Jenison Christian School and Unity Christian High School. He proudly served his country in the National Guard from 1970-1976. He worked just shy of 45 years for Sunset Senior Communities with the majority of that time spent in maintenance at Brookcrest, where he truly loved his work, never wanting to retire. Gary was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. He had a special passion for his children and grandchildren, attending their sporting and school events, going to special places as often as possible, and helping them out whenever he could. He was always there to give of his time and resources to benefit others. He lived to serve and wanted others to love and take care of each other. He will be deeply missed, but joyfully remembered by his wife Karalee (Stephan) Doornbos; their children, Tracie and Brian Nelson, Joel and Sonya Doornbos, Josh and Danielle Doornbos, Sam and Meagan Doornbos; ten grandchildren, Mollie, Mason, Brandy, Brody, Izabella, Ethan, Logan, Tristan, Jaxton, and Kyleigh; siblings, Jan and Doug Brower, Karen Doornbos, Bryan Doornbos, Marlene Cooper, Dan Doornbos, Roger and Carolyn DeJong, Kim Steigenga; as well as many in-laws, extended family, and a host of long-time friends. In lieu of a service, contributions may be made in Gary’s memory to Brookcrest Rehab and Life Center in Grandville. Burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Spectrum Butterworth ICU, 7 Heart, and the LTACH at Blodgett for the compassionate care and love given to Gary during his time there.
