Gail Schnurstein, age 83, of Caledonia, formerly of Saginaw, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025. Gail graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors and Masters degree in social work. She was then engaged in social work in the Saginaw area, taking a break to care for her children at home, then returning to the field until her retirement. Her life can be summed up as a life of serving others in her community. She was the mental health consultant for Headstart in Saginaw County. She counselled autistic children and she was also deeply involved in P.E.O. valuing women's education as well as the Saginaw Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) Council. Throughout her life, she gained many life-long friendships which she valued deeply. The people that she cherished most though were her family, especially her grandchildren who she loved to spend time with more than anything. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Gerald Schnurstein; parents, Jefferson and Marjorie Gray; brother, Gary Gray. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David (Catrina) Schnurstein, Karen Schnurstein, Laura (Brian Yost) Schnurstein; grandchildren, Abigail, Maxwell, and Alexander; as well as several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends. Per Gail’s wishes, her body has been donated to the University of Michigan. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Child Abuse and Neglect Council.
