July 2, 2026

Elsie Broene, age 95, of Allendale, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Elsie was a sweet, kind, and loving woman whose unwavering faith and joyful spirit brightened every room with her presence. She lived a full life centered around Jesus, her family, and serving others through the way she faithfully lived out her faith. Elsie had many passions and hobbies that she enjoyed throughout her life. She loved flowers, bike riding, and spending time in Grand Haven. She traveled around the world and spent 36 wonderful winters in Anna Maria Island, Florida, with her beloved husband, Harris. They especially loved welcoming their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to visit, creating memories their family will cherish forever. Elsie was a talented cook and baker, famous for her Dutch almond coffee cake. She also lovingly embroidered pillowcases for all of her grandchildren. She was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and always enjoyed a game of dominoes or cards. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Harris Broene;  and her daughter, Sharell Meyer. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, David and Joan Broene, Janice and David Barton, Jill and Rick Slagter; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Chris and Angela Roosien (Mikayla, Keegan, Cayden), Allen and Tracy Broene (Cora), Tim and Mandy Porterfield (Charlie, Casey, Ashlyn), Brett and Christina Barton (Owen, Malia), Scott Barton, Drew and Mandy Slagter (Kinsley, Myla), Kyle and Brittani Trevino (Karter, Easton, Krew, Dekker, Brylee, and one on the way), Brian and Courtney Grysen (Avery, Kambrie, Hayden); brother, Alvin and Mary Terpstra; and special friend, Dorothy Bosch. Elsie was a lifelong member of First Allendale Christian Reformed Church, where her faith was nurtured and faithfully lived out for many years. Though our hearts grieve her absence, we celebrate a life marked by steadfast faith, unconditional love, hospitality, humility, and compassion. Her legacy will continue to live on through the family she loved so deeply and the countless lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and lovingly remembered. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Allendale) 6651 Scott St., with Rev. Ken Kruithoff officiating. The burial will take place at Allendale Township Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
