Donald Jay Velthouse

Donald Jay Velthouse, age 88, passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, October 30, 2019, following a brief illness. Donald was born April 17, 1931 in Grand Rapids, MI. He served as a Medic in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his deployment, he relocated to Alexandria, VA and became a Radiology Technician. In 1996, he retired from the medical field and returned to Grand Rapids to live closer to his extended family. Don enjoyed traveling and made several visits to Europe following his retirement. He also enjoyed singing and shared his tenor voice at numerous hymn sings and church performances. The family is grateful Don is free from suffering and reunited with his family who preceded him in death, including his beloved parents, Anna and Herman Velthouse; brother, Peter J. Velthouse; sister-in-law, Frances Velthouse. Don is survived by his niece, Patricia (Thomas) Graham of Caledonia; nephew, Douglas (Jane) Velthouse of Ravenna; great nieces, Stacey (Joshua) Graham, Megan Graham; great-great nephew, Keaton Graham. He will also be missed by his furry companion, Nino. Funeral services will be held 12:30 pm Thursday, November 7 at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, with Rev. Allen Kirschbaum officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Interment Oak Grove Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.  Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Judes Children’s Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.
