David Shawn Laninga, age 58, of Wyoming, claiming God’s promise of everlasting life, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 17, 2025, and went to his eternal home.
For 26 years, David worked at Weller, where he made lasting relationships and was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence. Outside of work, David cherished his summers with his family at Sandy Pines, where they enjoyed boating, wave runners, and creating memories that would last a lifetime. He also had a passion for cars and was often found working on his vehicles, enjoying the challenge of fixing, and improving them. A devoted fan of racing, David loved watching Dale Earnhardt, and his enthusiasm for cars and racing ran deep. He was a man of many interests, but above all, he was a dedicated Christian and family man who lived out the verse, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother who will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Tamie; his children and grandchildren, Stephanie and Joel Gerweck (Sanjarie, Ezekiel), Tyler Laninga, Michelle Laninga; parents, Arthur and Harriet Laninga; brother and sister, Doug and Sandy Laninga, Kathy and Chris Weller; parents-in-law, Chuck and Joyce Stebelton; brother-in-law, Thomas and Susan VanderMeulen; and several nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Pastor Merle Buwalda officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Wednesday, October 22, from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Calvin’s Car Lot.
